Rustic Fence

Prior to starting to work on the image itself we need to make a wood pattern that we'll later use to make the fence. To do this, open a new document at 800 pixels by 800 pixels in size. Then set the background color to a light brown (I chose #de9650) and the foreground color to a darker brown (711f03). Then go to Filters > Render > Clouds to create the clouds, which is the basis of the wood pattern.

Create a new document with the dimensions of 940 pixels by 1970 pixels, and a resolution of 300 pixel/inch. Make a new layer, and name it "Wooden Top." Grab the Pen Tool (P) and start drawing the shape of the body. Set anchor points and stretch them by holding down left-click.

Create a New Document 950 pixels wide by 600 pixels heigh, set the Resolution to 300 pixels/inch, and the Background to white. Make a rectangular selection with a Style of Fixed Size, a Width of 400 px, and Height of 100 px.

Space Explosion

Before we get to the drawing, first a word on composition. Most of the image is going to be empty space with one main focal point — the planets exploding. Therefore, where we place that focal point is going to be important. I've followed what's known as the Rule of Thirds.

Start Photoshop, open a new document, and fill the background with light orange/sand color (#EABE94). Select the Rounded Rectangle Tool and draw the base of the icon—color #CC622E (for now).

As a base, we will use this photograph I took. It's not the greatest photo, but we can use it to define the basic shapes. The advantage of this photo is the fact that it was taken with wide-lens camera, and the perspective is nicely visible. When we talk about icons, perspective is very often VERY excessive, so this is perfect.
